Working With Me

I maintain an independent, small-volume consultation practice. I work with families preparing for birth in hospital and birth-center settings throughout the Puget Sound region. Many families I work with don't want a doula at their birth — they want to feel calm, informed, and steady going in. The Prepared Birth offers thoughtful birth education and consultation for people who want clarity during pregnancy without adding another person present during labor.

My approach

My approach comes from years spent close to birth — including time at The Birthing Inn and alongside families birthing in local hospitals.

That experience taught me how birth actually unfolds: slowly, intensely, sometimes quietly, sometimes asking more than expected. Preparation, to me, is about helping families feel oriented rather than overwhelmed — so decisions feel familiar rather than frightening.

After having two unmedicated births, I was very anxious about delivering in a hospital this time. I was considered high-risk and had to switch to a hospital birth at the very end of my pregnancy, which made me feel even more uncertain about the whole experience. From the moment I met Sarah, I immediately felt more at ease. She took the time to sit down with me, answer my questions, and help me feel informed and confident going into this birth. She even helped me choose the hospital and doctor who would best align with my desire to have a birth experience as close to a home birth as possible, but in a hospital setting. When I went into labor, Sarah was the first person I called. She calmly guided me on what to do next and helped me decide when it was time to head to the hospital. She met us there and stayed by my side even before we were officially checked in. Throughout the entire process, Sarah kept me informed about what was simply hospital protocol and what was actually necessary, and she helped advocate for my birth plan every step of the way. Because of her, I felt calm, supported, and confident in my choices. I can truly say this was my redemptive birth. Despite being in a hospital, the environment felt peaceful and exactly how I had hoped. The lights were dim, worship music was playing the entire time, there were minimal distractions, and only a small number of people in the room—just as I requested. I was able to have delayed cord clamping, two full hours of uninterrupted skin-to-skin after my baby was born, and so many other details that were very important to me. I truly believe that having Sarah by my side is what made all of this possible. She has worked with the hospital staff many times before, and the doctors trusted her presence in the room. I believe that helped create a more relaxed environment where my birth plan was respected and my body was trusted. I cannot recommend Sarah enough! Her knowledge, experience and calm presence made all the difference in what became a truly beautiful and empowering birth experience.

One of the biggest things we appreciated about Sarah was how much experience she brings. From our very first conversation, she was answering questions we didn’t even know we should be asking. It gave us a lot of peace of mind knowing that pretty much anything that might come up, she had likely seen before. Throughout pregnancy, she felt more like a friend than a formal consultant. As random questions popped up (after doctor’s appointments or from stories friends were sharing) she was always available to talk things through. She helped us interpret what we were hearing and think about our options in a calm, grounded way. She’s very generous with her time and attention, even when she’s coming off long nights attending births. Her style is definitely more relaxed and conversational than highly structured. If you want someone warm, knowledgeable, and accessible who feels like a steady presence in your corner throughout pregnancy and beyond, that’s Sarah! Our labor ended up moving really quickly, so we didn’t end up using a lot of positions or breathing techniques. Still, just having her there made us feel calmer and more confident. It was comforting knowing that if anything unexpected had come up, we would have had someone experienced helping us navigate it. Overall, Sarah is warm, experienced, and deeply supportive. We’re really grateful she was part of our birth experience and would absolutely recommend her to a friend.

My husband and I are first time parents, and we wanted someone who is truly knowledgeable and experienced in this field. Sarah not only has an incredible understanding of everything birth-related, but she is also extremely professional. We really appreciated her punctuality and respect for time, while also being so generous with her time and support—because honestly, this birth journey can feel like a lot to take in. She makes you feel comfortable and reassured, which helped me feel confident that I was in good hands. If you’re looking for someone you can truly trust during one of the most sensitive and intimate times of your life, I highly recommend Sarah. Thank you, Sarah!

Sarah was wonderful to work with. I remember when I found out I was pregnant I wasn’t sure which direction I wanted to go and was trying to get information. I have a lot of hospital anxiety. I had a poor experience over the phone with the OB-GYN/hospital. When I called The Birthing Inn Sarah answered the phone and I will never forget how much she calmed me, made me feel important and special. I knew right then I wanted to work with their team. Sarah was also helpful postpartum, helping me understand pumping and validating my emotions around it. Thank you Sarah for your kindness and wisdom. The whole experience was so positive and I appreciate you & your team.

We absolutely LOVED having Sarah with us for both of our babies births! We started out at TBI and transferred to Tacoma Gen for our first and ended up needing a VBAC. Sarah was strong, advocated for me and my spouse and our little love the entire time. It would have been so much harder (and many more tears) if she hadn't been there to help me through the birthing process. She's incredibly knowledgeable and knows most of the teams in the area, which is helpful. She's professional, but can be pushy for your sake in such a loving momma bear way. Which is why we had her there for our 2nd baby too! That one was wild and I'm so glad we were at the hospital. Sarah knew the ins and outs and was able to help me push through so we didn't end up with a C-section. Her post care to make sure transition from hospital to home is stellar and she's got so many resources up her sleeve. If you've been on the fence about having a doula, do it! It's worth it so much, especially as new parents. She's worth it, I promise! Our kids are 3 years and 8 months and when it's time for a third little love you bet we will be having Sarah right there alongside us. You're not just a client to her and her team, you're family and it's beautiful.

Sarah S. was my doula as I welcomed my first born son. I started meeting with her while pregnant and she walked me through so much education on mental preparedness, postpartum care and so much more. When my pregnancy turned out to be breech she stepped up and provided additional meetings reviewing C-section preparedness for the surgery and the postpartum care. Sarah held space for all my feelings, providing strong and empathetic emotional support while also addressing all questions so my spouse and I didn’t feel so underwater as new parents. I credit her for having such a smooth path to hurdle the obstacles that come with every birth and postpartum journey. If Sarah’s on your team you’re a lucky one.

Sarah is amazing! She was there for me consistently my whole last trimester and right by my side during birth and after. She continued to be there for us for whatever we needed for months postpartum and is still our dear friend! Sarah is the best doula I could have asked for and helped me learn so much on my journey. I felt so much more prepared for any challenges that could happen during labor and delivery because of her knowledge. I felt so supported and cared for. We love you Sarah!

We were hoping for an unmedicated birth at a birth centre but baby had other plans. He was breech and after a failed ECV we were booked for a planned C-section. We are a military family so my husband and I don't have family here. Sarah was with us every step of the way! She helped me navigate every detail as a first time mum which really put me at ease. Sarah is an amazing source for information on many aspects of birth whether the outcome be in a hospital setting or not. By far the best decision we made since getting pregnant was hiring Sarah to support us and our new family. We've learned so much the last year and are absolutely grateful for Sarah and everything she's done for us and our baby boy. Her services are priceless, you won't regret it! Thank you Sarah!
